Good morning from Apple's WWDC Keynote at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco
Apple just opened the doors for media. Inside the auditorium, the lights are low and Beats 1 is playing
Apples WIFI is really slow right now
Eddy Cue just walked in and there was a outbreak of hoots
The arena is configured to be much larger than it was when Apple last used it in September for the IPad Pro and Apple TV launch
Official capacity of the arena is 7000. Looks like its pretty full, even in the upper balcony
Executives trickling in. Spotted Jeff Williams, Cook's operations guy
The huge screen is displaying an Apple logo with a rainbow of text that depicts Swift code
Pretty clear that Swift is a primary focus. It's depicted on everything here from the signage to the logos and even on one of the official Snapchat filters Apple created
The official WWDC wifi is so slow that it's hard to upload any photos. And data service inside the venue is pretty bad too (Tmobile).
There was talk of using metal detectors for screening, but they were not used. Cant imagine what a bottleneck that would have caused
There were k9 dogs in use, and flags are all at half mast in recognition of the terrible mass murders in Orlando.
I think the WiFi is going through a metal detector
Typing updates is like sending messages over a 300 baud modem on Fidonet in 1992.
There must be some people streaming Game of Thrones or something while they wait for the Keynote to start
Or downloading all their app updates
Seated under a robotic camera arm on a 20' boom. its located on the balcony, and sweeps back and forth taking pans of the audience and stage
Remember the time Steve Jobs asked the audience to turn off all of their personal WiFi networks because all the available bandwidth for the demo machines was being overwhelmed. He said, do you want to have your networks on or do you want to see this?
Beats 1 is making a shout out to WWDC, telling the global audience about Apple's developer conference
Apple seems to be at an interesting intersection of cool things: music, custom silicon, OS for nearly all the premium computer hardware sold, creative apps. And no ads. I wonder if we'll hear more about the lack of advertising on Apple's platforms.
Okay the text on the Apple logo of the screen is now animating. Must be gettting real close to showtime
Interesting that the WWDC snapchat filter looks like its gone already
Applause for Tim Cook on stage now
Cook starts will an acknowlegement of the "senseless" violence in Florida. Says we "We celebrate our diversity." calls for all to rise and have a moment of silence
A jam packed morning - 27th WWDC 13million developers sold out over 5000 attendees. millions watching at home
attendees from 74 countries. I have two german guys next to me, one from Munich and one from Berlin
350 scholarships, and 120 attendees under 18. youngest is 9
"i met her yesterday and she is going to make one heck of a developer!" Cook says
App Store: new milestone of 2 Million Apps
130 billion app downloads. about to pass $50 billion in payments to developers
watchOS, tvOS, OSX, iOS - we're going to move each forward today
Kevin Lynch is going to start with watchOS
top focus is performance - launch times for apps, should be instantaneous
watchOS 3 keep favorite apps in memory, does background updates, refreshes data before you bring them up
Shows a footbal scores app launching with no beachball - 7x faster, feels like a million times faster
Will use the side button to pull up the Dock, which brings up favorite apps
Swipe up Control Center puts glances in one sheet
message reply options now include "scribble," which gives you a way to write out letters to spell a word. looks really cool
